거대 마젤란 망원경
The giant Magellan telescope is a terrestrial telescope that will be completed in 2018. It is abbreviated as GMT. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute is also involved in constructing this telescope, and it is expected that Korea will be able to use it for about one month a year after completion, which will contribute greatly to the development of astronomy in Korea. 거대마젤란망원경은 2018년에 완성될 예정인 지상망원경이다. 줄여서 GMT라고 부른다. 이 망원경은 8.4미터 구경의 반사경 일곱장을 모아서 주경을 이루게 되어 구경 24.5미터인 단일 반사경과 동일한 분해능을 갖게 된다. 거대마젤란 망원경의 집광력은 현존 최대 구경의 Keck 망원경의 집광력보다 6배가 크다. 이 망원경을 건설하는데에는 한국천문연구원도 참여하여, 완공 후에 대한민국도 1년에 한달 가량 이를 이용할 수 있어 대한민국 천문학의 발전에도 큰 기여를 할 것으로 예상된다.
