The endoplasmic reticulum is one of the organelles found in all eukaryotic cells, and consists of a network of tubules, vesicles, and cisterna. The endoplasmic reticulum is made up of proteins and is distributed throughout the cell (the prokaryote does not have a cell organelle, so it does not have an endoplasmic reticulum). The basic structure and organization of the endoplasmic reticulum is the extension of the nuclear membrane (endomembrane system) Similar to normal cell membranes. The endoplasmic reticulum is composed of proteins (transmembrane receptors or intracellular proteins) to be part of the cell membrane, synthesis of proteins to be secreted out of the cell (ie digestive enzymes, calcium adsorption, synthesis / storage of glycogen and steroids or macromolecules) Structure formation, and transportation. The endoplasmic reticulum in the muscle is called the sarcoplasmic reticulum. 소포체는 모든 진핵세포에서 발견되는 세포소기관의 하나로 소포세관(tubule), 소포(vesicle), 시스터나(cisterna)가 그물모양으로 이루어져 있다. 소포체는 단백질을 만들어서 세포 곳곳에 전달한다.(원핵세포는 세포소기관을 가지고 있지 않으며, 따라서 소포체 역시 가지고 있지 않다.) 소포체의 기본 구조 및 구성은 비록 핵막의 연장(내막계(Endomembrane System))이지만 일반적인 세포막과 비슷하다. 소포체는 세포막의 일부가 될 단백질(막횡단 수용체 나 막내부 단백질)을 비롯하여 세포 밖으로 분비될 단백질(즉 소화 효소, 칼슘 흡착, 글리코겐과 스테로이드 또는 고분자물질의 합성/저장 등)의 합성, 단백질 2차 구조 형성, 수송이 이루어지는 곳이다. 근육에서의 소포체는 근소포체(sarcoplasmic reticulum)로 불린다.
