A solid refers to a state in which a shape or volume does not change even with changes in force or pressure because it has a certain crystal phase on the material. The field of physics that deals with solids is called solid physics. Solids have very regular shapes, like crystals of salt or snow, and irregularly shaped masses like glass or rubber. The lightest solid known is aerogels, which weigh three times as much as air.

고체는 물질의 상으로 일정한 결정을 가지고 있어 힘이나 압력의 변화에도 모양이나 부피가 변하지 않는 상태를 말한다. 고체를 다루는 물리학 분야를 고체물리학이라고 한다. 고체에는 소금이나 눈의 결정처럼 매우 규칙적인 형태를 취하는 것과 유리나 고무처럼 형태가 불규칙한 덩어리로 되어 있는 것이 있다. 알려진 것 중 가장 가벼운 고체는 무게가 공기의 3배 밖에 되지 않는 에어로젤이다.

Unlike gas and liquid, solids can maintain a uniform shape. The difference from the fluid is that the shear stress is applied and the elasticity is created in a way that the shape changes, so that the shear stress can be sustained. Crystalline solids and amorphous solids can be classified according to whether they have a certain crystal structure at the atom or molecule level that constitutes the material.

고체 기체·액체와 더불어 물질이 가질 수 있는 상(相: Phase)중에 하나로 온도와 압력이 변하면 다른 상으로 바뀔 수 있다. 고체는 기체·액체와는 달리 일정한 형태를 유지할 수 있다. 전단응력이 가해지면 모양이 변화하는 방식으로 탄성력이 만들어져서 전단응력을 버텨낼 수 있는 점이 유체(流體: Fluid)와의 차이점이다. 물질을 구성하는 원자나 분자 수준에서 일정한 결정구조를 가지는가에 따라서 결정성(結晶性: Crystalline)고체와 비결정성(非結晶性: Amorphous)고체로 나눌 수 있다.
