It is a perennial vine plant. Its stem is long and its length is 80 ~ 150㎝. It has little or no hair. Leaves are phyllotaxis, superior odontophobe composed of 2 ~ 5 pairs, and tendon at the end. The lobules are ovate, 3 ~ 5㎝ long, 15 ~ 30㎜ wide, with dull or pointed ends, protruding veins on the back, lanceolate, fan-like, pointed end and sawtooth. Flowers bloom purple in September, 4 ~ 8㎝ in foliage blades developed in leaves, and run on one side toward the center. The calyx is shallowly divided into 5 ends, the corolla is butterfly shape, and the fruit is flat oval with flattened, the seed is round and black. This species has 4 ~ 10 lobules. When dried, it has yellowish brown color and the lower leaves have no tendrils. 큰등갈퀴 다년생 덩굴성 식물로 줄기는 모가 지고 길이 80~150㎝이며 털이 다소 있거나 없다. 잎은 호생하고 2~5쌍으로 구성된 우수우상복엽이며 끝에 덩굴손이 있다. 소엽은 난형으로 길이 3~5㎝, 너비 15~30㎜이고 끝은 둔하거나 뾰족하며 뒷면의 엽맥은 튀어나오고 탁엽은 부채모양으로 끝이 뾰족하고 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 9월에 자주색으로 피고 잎짬에 4~8㎝의 총상화서가 발달하여 중앙 이상에 한쪽으로 치우쳐서 달린다. 꽃받침은 끝이 5개로 얕게 갈라지고 화관은 나비 모양(蝶形)이며 과실은 협과로 편평한 장타원형이고 종자는 둥글며 흑색이다. 본종은 소엽이 4~10개이고 건조하면 황갈색을 띠고 하부의 잎은 덩굴손이 없다.
