원유를 증류할 때, 35∼220℃의 끓는점 범위에서 유출(溜出)되는 탄화수소의 혼합체이다. 중질(重質) 가솔린이라고도 한다. 끓는점의 범위 및 성분 탄화수소의 구성으로 보아 가솔린 유분(溜分)과 실질적으로 동일하며, 이 유분을 내연기관의 연료 이외의 용도로, 특히 석유화학 원료 등으로 사용할 경우에 나프타라고 한다. 넓은 뜻으로는 원유를 증류할 때와 혈암유(頁岩油) ·석탄 등을 건류할 때 생기는 광물성 휘발유를 일괄해서 나프타라고 한다.
