The unification of the three kingdoms of Silla refers to the unification of the Korean peninsula in 676, the event considered as the first national unification in the history of the Korean people. In 676, Silla exiled the Tang army to the north of the Taedong River and achieved reunification in 676, following the destruction of Gaya, Baekje and Goguryeo. The negative evaluation of the incomplete reunification that lost much of the Goguryeo territory through foreign taxation is accompanied by a positive evaluation which means that the Najang war has expelled the foreign tax and formed a single national nation. Balhae entered the old territory of Goguryeo of Manchuria, which Silla did not occupy. The period of the coexistence of Silla and Balhae is called the North and South Korea period. For this reason, the view that the first unified nation of the Korean people is not the Silla but the Goryeo is emerging dominantly, and it is suggested that the 'Three Kingdoms of the Silla Kingdom' should be replaced with 'the disintegration of the Three Kingdoms of Silla'

신라의 삼국통일은 한민족의 역사에서 최초의 민족 통일로 간주되는 사건으로, 676년 신라가 한반도의 제국가를 통일한 것을 말한다. 신라는 가야, 백제, 고구려 등 한반도에 있던 나라들을 차례로 멸망시켜 병합하였고, 676년에 당나라 군대를 대동강 북쪽으로 축출하여 통일을 달성하였다. 나당 전쟁으로 외세를 축출하고 민족단일국가를 성립시켰다는 것에 의미를 두는 긍정적 평가와 함께 외세를 개입시켜 고구려 영토의 상당부분을 상실한 불완전한 통일이라는 부정적 평가가 병존한다. 신라가 차지하지 못한 만주의 고구려 옛 영토에는 발해가 들어섰다. 신라와 발해가 공존한 시기를 남북국 시대라고 부른다. 이 때문에 한민족 최초의 통일 국가는 신라가 아니라 고려라는 견해가 유력하게 대두되고 있으며, '신라의 삼국통일' 대신 '신라의 삼국해체' 또는 '원삼국 해체기' 등으로 고쳐야 한다는 견해도 나오고 있다.
