불꽃이 보이지 않게 금속을 용접하는 자동용접법으로 1940년대부터 적용되기 시작하였으며, 정련작용(精鍊作用)을 하는 입자 모양의 피복제(被覆製:flux)로 용접 부분을 두껍게 덮고, 그 속에서 용접봉이 용접선상을 따라 나아가면서 용접되는 재료와의 사이에 큰 전류의 아크를 발생시켜 용접하는 방법이다. 녹아들어 가는 지점이 깊고 결함이 거의 생기지 않아 용접 이음부의 신뢰도가 높으며, 아크가 보이지 않고 가스 발생량이 적어 청정한 환경을 유지할 수 있다는 장점이 있다.
