विंचू एक विषारी प्राणी.याने मनुष्यास दंश केला असता शरीराची आग होते. भारतात सुमारे १२० प्रकारचे विंचू आढळतात. त्यापैकी सर्वात मोठा विंचू हा १८.२० सेंटिमीटर लांबीचा आहे. ऑर्थोकायरस बस्तवडेई प्रजातीत विंचवाच्या एकूण पाच जातींचा समावेश असून त्यापैकी महाराष्ट्रात दोन जाती आहेत. महाराष्ट्रात विंचवाचे दोन प्रकार आढळतात, काळा विंचू आणि लाल विंचू. काळा विंचू आकाराने मोठा असतो. परंतु हा कमी घातक असतो. काळा विंचू महाराष्ट्रात बहुतेक ठिकाणी आढळून येतो.
