Suku Batak

Batak is a collective term used to identify a number of ethnic groups found in highland areas in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Their interior is located in the west of Medan and is centered on Lake Toba. Actually the "Batak" people are made up of different ethnic groups but have similar language, culture and customs. Although the term "Batak" is used for Toba, Karo, Pak Pak, Simalungun, Angkola and Mandailing, there are those who do not like to be Batak people. Before they were colonized by the Dutch East Indies, Batak tribes had a reputation as fierce heroes who sometimes practiced cannibalism. With the arrival of the Dutch colonizers, many of them had converted to Christianity. HKBP Church is a church with the most populous in Indonesia. The Batak society is pious. The famous Batak handicrafts include woven, wood carvings and especially gravestone carvings. Their burial ceremony is very rich and complex. Batak adalah sebuah istilah kolektif yang digunakan untuk mengenal pasti sebilangan kumpulan etnik yang terdapat di kawasan tanah tinggi di Sumatra Utara, Indonesia. Kawasan pedalaman mereka terletak di sebelah barat Medan dan berpusat di Danau Toba. Sebenarnya orang "Batak" terdiri daripada beberapa kumpulan etnik yang berbeza tetapi mempunyai bahasa, budaya dan adat yang agak serupa. Walaupun istilah "Batak" digunakan untuk orang-orang Toba, Karo, Pak Pak, Simalungun, Angkola dan Mandailing, ada di kalangan mereka yang tidak suka dikenali sebagai orang Batak. Sebelum mereka dijajah oleh Hindia Timur Belanda, suku Batak mempunyai reputasi sebagai pahlawan-pahlawan yang garang yang kadangkala mengamalkan kanibalisme. Dengan ketibaan penjajah Belanda, ramai di antara mereka telah memeluk agama Kristian. Gereja HKBP merupakan sebuah gereja dengan penganut paling ramai di Indonesia. Masyarakat Batak adalah bersifat kebapaan. Hasil kraf tangan Batak yang terkenal termasuk hasil tenunan, ukiran kayu dan terutama sekali, ukiran batu-batu nisan. Upacara pengkebumian mereka sangat kaya dan kompleks.
