Ulama is a leader or religious leader who is tasked with guiding and guiding Muslims both in religious matters as well as in everyday matters that are needed both from religious and social issues. Ulama comes from the words of the pious meaning of Islamic scholars or a person who is highly knowledgeable especially about religious affairs and practicing the learned knowledge. A pious person is also seen from the point of apparel and his outer life. An ustaz or teacher is always labeled as a scholar because they have the science of ukhrawi rather than worldly knowledge. Mufti, qadi, faqih and muhaddith are examples of scholars.

Ulama ialah seorang pemuka atau pemimpin agama yang bertugas untuk membimbing dan memandu umat Islam baik dalam masalah-masalah agama mahupun masalah sehari-hari yang diperlukan baik dari sisi keagamaan ataupun sosial kemasyarakatan. Ulama berasal dari perkataan alim yang bermaksud ilmuan islam atau seseorang yang tinggi ilmu pengetahuan terutama tentang hal ehwal agama dan mengamalkan ilmu yang dipelajari. Seorang yang alim juga dilihat dari sudut pakaian dan kehidupan luarannya. Seorang ustaz atau tok guru selalu dilabel sebagai alim kerana mereka memiliki ilmu ukhrawi berbanding ilmu duniawi. Mufti, qadi, faqih dan muhaddith adalah contoh ulama.
