acedia

Acedia

Acedia (akēdía, akedeía - "lack of concern for one's own being and existence, indifference" from kēdía (care) or according to Hippocrates and Galena aciditas, ie "blackberry bile", melancholy) - in theology of religious burnout, apathy (psychology) and indifference, the so-called. monk's disease, spiritual "depression", sometimes also associated with laziness or laziness. Acedia, the "sickness of the soul" manifested by the inability to experience peace, deconcentration and apathy, has been known in Christian tradition for at least since the times of the desert fathers. They described it. Evagrius of Pontu and Jan Kasjan (who calls acedi taedium - "surplus"). Acedia is depressed, sad, lack of motivation, lack of commitment and hope, discouragement, exhaustion, indifference, and a sense of spiritual emptiness. It is an inability to be here and now, to deal with what is right. Evagrius describes in one of his works an example of a monk overloaded with a demon of acedia. The monk is sitting in his cell, but he can not stand it. It still looks out the window, or sometimes someone will not come to visit. Opisali ją m.in.
