Autotomia

Autotomia - a physiological defense reaction that occurs mainly among invertebrates, consisting in the refusal of an animal to refuse body parts when in danger, most often during escape from the predator or in response to unfavorable environmental conditions. An animal's body part is usually repaired more or less. An example of autotomies is the rejection of the tail by most lizards or the legs by raccoons and arachnids. The spit rejects some of their bowels, starfish and snakes - their shoulders. An attacker is satisfied with the rejected part of his body or paralyzed by the toxins contained in the discarded organs, and the attacked animal comes to life.
