Berberia

Berberia or Barbaria is a term used by Europeans from the 16th to the 19th centuries for the Maghreb, the Central and Western coastal regions of North Africa - present-day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. The name comes from the nomadic Berber tribe, the primitive hosts of these lands. This concept was associated with the Berber pirates, whose refuges were the ports of this coast and where they attacked the ships and maritime settlements of the Mediterranean and the north and central Atlantic. These robberies had robbery purposes, but most of all were to supply the European and Sub-Saharan Africans who were later sold as slaves.
