Nom - in ancient and early Middle Ages Egyptian territorial-administrative unit of the country, the equivalent of a district, a province, a province or a county. Each of the nomes had their capital and coat of arms. The arms were mostly the emblem of guardian deities, usually in the form of animals, plants. At the head of the nomue was an official called a nomarch or a manager, who was assisted by a local assembly in government. Herbami przeważnie były godła bóstw opiekuńczych, zwykle pod postacią: zwierząt, roślin. Na czele nomu stał urzędnik zwany nomarchą lub zarządcą, któremu w rządzeniu pomagało lokalne zgromadzenie. Nomy jako najbliższe okolice miast zorganizowane wraz z terenami rolniczymi w miasto-państwo pojawiły się w okresie przeddynastycznym ok. 3600 p.n.e. Jednak istnienie właściwych nomów źródła potwierdzają dopiero od czasów faraona Dżesera, ale emblematy symbolizujące te prowincje wskazują na znacznie wcześniejszy rodowód, jeszcze sprzed zjednoczenia Dolnego i Górnego Egiptu. Pod względem terytorialnym były stosunkowo niewielkie, ich długość wynosiła ok. 30 - 40 km po obu stronach Nilu, o ile dolina rzeki była wąska w danym miejscu, lub też na jednym brzegu, gdy dolina rzeki była szeroka.
