Airgel

Aerogel

Airgel is an extremely light porous solid material derived from a gel, whose liquid part has been replaced by a gas. The result of this process is a solid block with extremely low density and several other remarkable properties, such as excellent thermal and electrical insulation efficiency. Due to its physical characteristics this material has already been dubbed solid smoke. The airgel was created by Steven Kistler in 1931 as a result of a bet with Charles Learned to try to replace the gelatine liquid with gas without causing shrinkage.
