Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and has a numerical value of 1. It is derived from the Phoenician letter Aleph or Aleph. Letters that have arisen from Alpha include the Latin A and the letter A from the Cyrillic alphabet. Plutarch in Moralia presents a discussion as to why the alpha letter is the first in the alphabet. Plutarch's announcer suggests that Cadmus, the Phoenician who supposedly lived in Thebes and introduced the alphabet in Greece, "put alpha first because that is the Phoenician name for bull, which they, like Hesiod, considered not as the second or third, but the first of the needs. " It is a reference to a passage in Hesiod's The Works and the Days, which advised the first Greek farmers to "First get a bull, then a woman." A simpler explanation is that it was the first letter in the Phoenician alphabet. According to Plutarch's natural order of vowel assignment to the planets, alpha was bound to the Moon. For they were also associated with the Moon in the primitive religious symbolism of both Sumerians and Egyptians because of the increasing shape of their horns.
