Amazonite

Amazonita

Amazonite is a green variety of feldspar microcline. The name is taken from the Amazon River, from which certain green stones were previously obtained, but it is doubtful whether the green Feldspar occurs in the Amazon area. The modern amazonite is a mineral of limited occurrence. Initially, it was obtained almost exclusively from the Miyask area in the Ilmen Mountains, 50 miles southwest of Chebabinsk, Russia, where it occurs naturally in granite rocks. More recently, high quality crystals have been obtained from Pike's Peak in Colorado, where it is associated with smoky quartz, orthoclase, and albite in granite or coarse pegmatite. Other locations in the United States have amazonite and can also be found in pegmatite in Madagascar and Brazil. Due to its bright green color, the Amazon is sometimes cut and polished like a precious stone. The color was attributed to the presence of copper but because it is removed by heat, it is probably due to some organic pigment, perhaps a salt or organic iron. More recent studies attribute color to lead. The chemical composition of amazonite is KAlSi₃O₈.
