Ampelography is the discipline of botany and agronomy that studies, identifies and classifies the varieties, generally called vine varieties based on the morphometric description of the characteristics of the various organs of the plant. The observed characteristics traditionally include the shape and color of the leaves and grape bunches and the morphology of the apical structures of the shoots of the vine, but recently these observations, which are generally complex and subject to subjectivity, are being progressively replaced by the determination of the genetic profile of plants based on the study of their DNA and RNA. In order to standardize the observations, the International Organization of Vine and Wine has established the 88 descriptors that must be obtained in a complete morphometric study and that are required for the registration of a grape variety. Based on this criterion, around 5 000 varieties of Vitis are recognized in the world, of the more than 10,000 that are estimated to be cultivated, which, with their synonymy and linguistic variants, correspond to more than 40 000 registered names.

A ampelografia é a disciplina da botânica e da agronomia que estuda, identifica e classifica as variedades, em geral denominadas castas de videira com base na descrição morfométrica das características dos vários órgãos da planta. As características observadas incluem tradicionalmente a forma e coloração das folhas e dos cachos e bagos de uva e a morfologia das estruturas apicais dos rebentos da videira, mas recentemente estas observações, em geral complexas e sujeitas a subjectividade, estão a ser progressivamente substituídas pela determinação do perfil genético das plantas com base no estudo dos seus DNA e RNA. Para padronizar as observações, a Organização Internacional da Vinha e do Vinho estabeleceu os 88 descritores que devem ser obtidos num estudo morfométrico completo e que são requeridos para o registo de uma casta. Com base nesse critério são reconhecidas no Mundo cerca de 5 000 castas diferentes de Vitis, das mais de 10 000 que se estima sejam cultivadas, as quais, com a respectiva sinonímia e variantes linguísticas, correspondem a mais de 40 000 nomes registados.
