Apraxia

Apraxia

Apraxia is a neurological disorder characterized by a loss of ability to perform precise movements and gestures that would lead to a given goal, even though the patient has the will and physical ability to perform them. It results from dysfunctions in the cerebral hemispheres, in the frontal lobe, more specifically in the motor cortex and in its secondary motor area. It is characterized, more specifically, in the reduction of the capacity to perform motor activities despite the motor abilities, the sensory function and the comprehension of the required task to be intact. It leads to a decrease in the pantomime capabilities of the use of objects and the ability to perform known motor acts. Apraxia is a pathology caused by brain injuries such as accidents, tumors, etc. The term "apraxia" was first used in 1871 by Steinthal. There is no universal definition for the term, but Rothi and Heilman suggest that it is defined as a neurological alteration of seized and propositional motion that can not be explained by elemental defects of motor or sensory systems.
