Guarea

Guarea

Guarea is a genus of large, persistent leaf trees of the family Meliaceae, native to tropical Africa, Central America and South America. They are hermaphrodite or dioecious trees. Pinnate leaves, with terminal bud usually of intermittent growth, with opposite, subopic or alternating leaflets. The fruit is a loculicidal capsule, with 2 to 10 valves, smooth, rough, costly or tuberculate, according to the species. The generality of its species is known by the common names of coarse, gito, gitó or jitó, pau-sailor and sailor. In the State of São Paulo, the species Guarea guidonia, Guarea macrophylla and Guarea kunthiana are frequent. Guarea é um género de árvores de grande porte de folha persistente da família Meliaceae, nativo da África tropical, da América Central e da América do Sul. São árvores hermafroditas ou dióicas. Folhas pinadas, com gema terminal geralmente de crescimento intermitente, com folíolos opostos, subopostos ou alternos;. O fruto é uma cápsula loculicida, com 2 a 10 valvas, lisa, rugosa, costada ou tuberculada, de acordo com a espécie. A generalidade das suas espécies é conhecida pelos nomes vulgares de ataúba, gito, gitó ou jitó, pau-marinheiro e marinheiro. No Estado de São Paulo são frequentes as espécies Guarea guidonia, Guarea macrophylla e Guarea kunthiana.
