Atimia

Atimia

Atimia was a form of cassation used in classical Athenian democracy. According to Fustel de Coulanges, the atimia was a punishment for the faults committed against the city, equivalent to an exile in the own earth. The man was declared a few was prevented from joining the courts or speak at the assemblies. He was also alienated from religion, for the sentence forbade him to enter the sanctuaries of the city and offer sacrifices to the gods. In the courts, it could not be accepted even as a witness, much less lodge a complaint. The punishment could be applied against anyone who tried to impose tyranny. It could also serve as punishment for bribery, military offenses, false testimony, or false accusation. References ↑ SUÁREZ, Michel. The bottom of virtue.
