Atonal music

Música atonal

Atonal music, in its broadest sense, is music devoid of a tonal or principal center, therefore having no preponderant tonality. Atonality, in this sense, generally applies to written compositions from 1908 to the present day, although previously it was used less frequently. In atonal music, the notes of the chromatic scale work independently of one another. In a narrower sense, atonal music is one that does not conform to the system of hierarchies that characterize the classical tonal music of Europe, produced between the 17th and 19th centuries. In an even more restricted sense, atonal music refers to music that is neither tonal nor serial, especially the pre-dodecaphonic music of the Second Vienna School, especially that of Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. According to John Rahn, however, "as a categorial, atonal label usually means only that the piece fits into the Western tradition and is not tonal."
