Brega is a Brazilian musical genre. However, its conceptualization as a musical aesthetic has been somewhat difficult - since there is no musical rhythm proper "tacky" - and the subject of discussions by scholars and professionals of the musical environment. Even without having established sufficiently rigid characteristics, the term practically was elevated to the condition of gender. Initially, the term designated a type of romantic music, with musical arrangement without great elaborations, enough sentimental appeal, strong melodies, lyrics with easy rhymes and simple words, in other words, a song supposedly of "bad taste" or "coarse." But from the conceptual imprecision that the term carries from its origin, it could include artists of other musical genres of Brazilian music, which, in fact, only reinforce this imprecision. To make conceptualization more difficult, the "tacky" would assimilate new aspects in the 1990s - some of which are far removed from the popular romantic line, such as the brega pop and tecnobrega, which are quite popular in the regional scene of northern Brazil, especially in the city of Belém.

Todavia, sua conceituação como estética musical tem sido um tanto difícil - uma vez que não há um ritmo musical propriamente "brega" - e alvo de discussões por estudiosos e profissionais do meio musical. Mesmo sem ter estabelecidas características suficientemente rígidas, o termo praticamente foi alçado à condição de gênero. Inicialmente, o termo designava um tipo de música romântica, com arranjo musical sem grandes elaborações, bastante apelo sentimental, fortes melodias, letras com rimas fáceis e palavras simples, em outras palavras, uma música supostamente de "mau gosto" ou "cafona". Mas a partir da imprecisão conceitual que o termo carrega desde sua origem, podia abarcar artistas de outros gêneros musicais da música brasileira, o que, na verdade, só reforçaria essa imprecisão. Para tornar a conceituação mais difícil, o "brega" assimilaria na década de 1990 novos aspectos - alguns dos quais distantes da linha romântica popular, como são os casos do brega pop e do tecnobrega, bastante populares na cena regional do Norte do Brasil, em especial, na cidade de Belém.
