Bristol

Bristol or, in Portuguese, Bristol is a city, unitary authority and a ceremonial county of England. It has an estimated population of 433,100 in unitary authority, with a large surrounding urban area having an estimated population of 1,070,000. It is the sixth most populous city in England and the eighth largest city in the United Kingdom. Part of the alliance of England's largest cities, Bristol is the most populous city in the English southwest. Historically within Gloucestershire, it was decreed city in 1155 and received county status in 1373. From the thirteenth century, for half a millennium, it was ranked among the three major English cities after London, alongside York and Norwich based on tax revenues . But in the 18th century, with the rapid rise of Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester during the Industrial Revolution, it eventually lost its status. It borders the counties of Somerset and Gloucestershire and is located near the historic towns of Bath to the southwest and Gloucester to the north. The city was built around the river Avon and has a small coastline in the estuary of the river Severn, which empties into the Bristol Channel.
