It is much more stable and less soluble in water than aragonite. It crystallizes in a wide variety of forms and also as stalactites. It can be fluorescent and phosphorescent. It is a source of calcium and lime, being also important as decorative stone and optical instruments. Main constituent of limestones and marbles, also occurring in shells, such as cement in sedimentary rocks and in carbonatites.
