Colza

Colza or cabbage is a plant whose seeds extract rape oil, also used in the production of biodiesel. The leaves of the plant also serve as fodder for livestock because of its high lipid content and average protein content. The main producers are the European Union, Canada, the United States, Australia, China and India. In India, it occupies up to 13% of arable land. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, rapeseed was the third source of vegetable oil in 2000, after soybeans, and palm, as well as being the world's second source of protein food, although its importance is only one-fifth of Soy. Rapeseed oil, in its natural state, contains erucic acid and glucosinolates which are moderately toxic at high doses. In the past there were doubts about the true origin of intoxications in Spain attributed in some scientific circles to herbicides.
