Cordite

Cordite

Cordite is a family of non-smokable explosives made by combining two efficient explosives: nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin, ie a double-base propellant. However, in Cordite N, a triple base propellant is used. Cordite is classified as explosive, but is usually used as a propellant for guns and rockets. The Cordite was developed by Great Britain in the late 19th century and has been used since World War I by England and its colonies as a propellant for firearms, artillery and naval weapons. Its use intensified in the early years of World War II, like 2 and 3-inch solid fuel rockets to launch anti-aircraft guns. Small Cordite rockets are also used to develop ejector seats, made by the Martin-Baker company.
