In geography, it is designated by delta the mouth of a river formed by several channels or arms of the bed of the river. This type of mouth is common in lowland rivers, due to the small slope and, consequently, small capacity of water discharge, which favors the accumulation of sand and alluviums at the mouth of the river. A typical case is the Nile delta in Egypt, which takes the form of a fan or triangle - which is the form of the Greek capital letter with this name - from which comes this designation. However, the shape of the delta depends on the topography of the coastal plain where the river will drain. The delta regions of Africa, Asia and Europe are very important because they have a large population concentration, such as the Rhine, Ganges and Niger deltas. Not all deltas are situated on the sea coasts: the Okavango Delta in Botswana is an inland delta.

Em geografia, designa-se por delta a foz de um rio formada por vários canais ou braços do leito do rio. Esse tipo de foz é comum em rios de planícies, devido à pequena declividade e, consequentemente, pequena capacidade de descarga de água, o que favorece o acúmulo de areia e aluviões na foz do rio. Um caso típico é o delta do rio Nilo, no Egito, que tem a forma de um leque ou triângulo - que é a forma da letra grega maiúscula com este nome -, de onde provém esta designação. No entanto, a forma do delta depende da topografia da planície costeira onde o rio vai desaguar. As regiões de deltas da África, da Ásia e da Europa são muito importantes pois possuem grande concentração populacional, como os deltas do Reno, do Ganges e do Níger. Nem todos os deltas se situam em costas marítimas: o delta do rio Okavango, no Botswana, é um delta interior.
