In Statistical Mechanics, a statistical ensemble is a set of several systems that, despite their different initial conditions, are identical to a statistically considered system. For example, in Quantum Mechanics, a pure ensemble is one where all intrinsic systems are characterized by the same state, that is, by the same ket. That is, a statistical ensemble is constituted by the set of microscopic states to which certain probabilistic weights are associated.

Ou seja, um ensemble estatístico é constituído pelo conjunto de estados microscópicos aos quais se associam determinados pesos probabilísticos.
