Herbivore is, both in vernacular language and in the different branches of biology, a living being that feeds on plants. Also referred to as first-order consumers or primary consumers, they feed directly or indirectly on organic substances produced by plants with chlorophyll. Herbivory is the name given to predation, when the predator is an animal and prey is a primary producer. Predation is a biological interaction that results in negative effects on the growth and survival of one population and on a positive or beneficial effect on the other. However, in the case of herbivory, predators can contribute to the perpetuation of plant species through plant pollination and seed dispersal. Some examples of herbivorous animals are most artiodactyl mammals, such as oxen, antelopes, sheep and perissodactyls, such as rhinoceroses, giraffes, horses and tapirs. When a person decides for an herbivorous diet, the term vegetarianism is used. In the case of insects that feed on plants or some of their products, the term used is phytophagy.

Herbívoro é, tanto na linguagem vernácula, como nos diferentes ramos da biologia, um ser vivo que se alimenta de plantas. Também designados por consumidores de primeira ordem ou consumidores primários, alimentam-se directa ou indirectamente de substâncias orgânicas produzidas pelos vegetais com clorofila. Herbivoria é o nome dado à predação, quando o predador é um animal e a presa é um produtor primário. A predação é uma interação biológica que resulta em efeitos negativos no crescimento e sobrevivência de uma população e em um efeito positivo ou benéfico na outra. No entanto, no caso da herbivoria, os predadores podem contribuir para a perpetuação das espécies vegetais pela polinização de plantas e dispersão de sementes. Alguns exemplos de animais herbívoros são a maioria dos mamíferos artiodátilos, como os bois, antílopes, ovelhas e perissodátilos, como rinocerontes, girafas, cavalos e tapires. Quando uma pessoa decide por uma alimentação herbívora, usa-se o termo vegetarianismo. No caso dos insetos que se alimentam de plantas ou de alguns dos seus produtos, o termo utilizado é fitofagia.
