Flegmasia

Flegmasia

Flegmasia is the term commonly used to describe the important edema and pain in the lower limbs in cases of deep venous thromboses that reach the iliac veins and even the inferior vena cava. There are two types: • Flegmasia cerulea dolens when there is cyanosis, with severe circulatory involvement • Flegmasia alba dolens when there is no cyanosis, but pallor due to ischemia secondary to compromise of arterial flow by cessation of venous return. It is the less frequent and more serious situation.
