The Ganges River, also known as the Benares River, is one of the major rivers of the Indian subcontinent, and one of the twenty largest in the world in water flow Its waters move eastward across the Ganges plain from northern India to Bangladesh. With 2510 km of extension, it is born in the western Himalayas, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, and it drains in the delta of the river Sunderbans, in the Bay of Bengal. It has long been considered a sacred river for the Hindus, who venerate it in the form of the goddess Ganga, and also has a great historical value: several provincial capitals or empires, such as Patliputra, Kannauj, Kara, Allahabad, Murshidabad and Calcutta, locate on its banks.
