Germinal

Germinal

Germinal is a novel by writer Émile Zola, the thirteenth in the series Les Rougon-Macquart and possibly one of the most famous. The scene takes place in the north of France during a strike caused by the reduction of the salaries. In addition to the technical aspects of mineral extraction and living conditions in the miners' groupings, Zola also describes the principle of the political and trade union organization of the working class, such as the existing divisions between Marxists and anarchists. To compose Germinal, the author spent two months working as a miner in the extraction of coal. He lived with the miners, ate and drank in the same taverns to familiarize himself with the environment. He felt in the flesh the sacrificed labor, the difficulty in pushing a charcoal-filled coach, the problem of heat and moisture inside the mine, the insane work that was needed to dig the coal, the promiscuity of the houses, low wages and hunger . Besides, he closely followed the miners' strike.
