Glioblastoma

Glioblastoma

Glioblastoma Multiforme, or GBM, is the most common form of malignancy in the brain. In most cases, it is lethal. Glioblastoma has no known etiology and arises in the brain itself, more specifically the astrocytes, which are cells responsible for some functions of this noble area of the human being. When a tumor has its origin defined by the astrocytes, we say that it is an astrocytoma. A glioblastoma is an advanced, or very aggressive, astrocytoma. There is no cure for this type of tumor, but alternative therapies in conjunction with standard treatment may increase patient survival. The major problem with this type of tumor is its rapid growth, and even after surgery, a further increase is expected. Even if the operation removes 99.99% of the neoplastic tissue, the remainder is able to multiply and depending on the case, it returns to the initial size within 30 days. It is practically impossible to effect the complete removal of the tumor as this would directly lead to brain injury.
