Tsetse fly

Mosca tsé-tsé

Tsetse is the name, in a dialect of Equatorial Africa, of the fly Glossina palpalis that transmits the sleeping sickness, caused by the trypanosoma brucei. Tsetse is not the cause of this disease; just carries it. Like many insects, this fly does not lay eggs, but the larvae, directly on the ground, where they are buried. A few hours later they become pupae with hard brown cocoons. After six weeks they are adult, ready to carry the trypanosomes. There are three varieties of this fly, all hematophilous. It is found from Lake Chad and Senegal in the west to Lake Victoria in the east. This region is bathed by the Congo River and its tributaries, being known as the Green Heart of the African Continent. The humidity of the place favors the appearance of insects of the most diverse species. The problems caused by the fact that this insect is the transmitter of sleeping sickness have led health authorities to cogitate in extermination programs. tsé-tsé é o nome, em um dialeto da África Equatorial, da mosca Glossina palpalis que transmite a doença do sono, causada pelo tripanossoma brucei.
