Mining of guano. Guano is the name given to feces of birds and bats when they accumulate. It can be used as an excellent fertilizer because of its high levels of nitrogen. Soil that is deficient in organic matter can become more productive with the addition of feces. Guano is composed of ammonia, uric acid, phosphoric acid, oxalic acid, carbonic acid, salts and impurities from the earth. Guano is collected on several islands in the Pacific Ocean and other oceans.
