The kilogram is the basic unit of mass of the International System of Units and is defined as being equal to the mass of the International Prototype Kilogram, IPK, which has a weight almost equal to that of a liter of water. This prototype is composed of iridium and platinum and has been under the custody of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sèvres, France since 1889, when it was sanctioned by the General Conference of Weights and Measures. The mass of a body is also used to determine its weight. In everyday usage, the mass of varied objects is given in kilograms and from it one can arrive at its weight, which is the measure of gravity in action in a given mass. In SI, the weight is not given in kilogram-force, this unit being replaced by Newton. Both the kilogram-force when the newton are units derived from the kilogram. Prior to adopting the IPK, the kilogram was defined as the mass of one liter of demineralized water at fifteen degrees Celsius. This method was abandoned, however, after it was realized that the mass of the same amount of water varied according to its purity.

O quilograma é a unidade básica de massa do Sistema Internacional de Unidades e é definido como sendo igual à massa do International Prototype Kilogram, IPK, que tem peso quase igual ao de um litro de água. Esse protótipo é composto por irídio e platina e encontra-se sob custódia do Escritório Internacional de Pesos e Medidas em Sèvres, França desde 1889, quando foi sancionado pela Conferência Geral de Pesos e Medidas. A massa de um corpo também é usada para determinar o seu peso. No uso cotidiano, a massa de objetos variados é dada em quilogramas e a partir dela pode-se chegar ao seu peso, que é a medida da gravidade em ação em uma determinada massa. No SI, o peso não é dado em quilograma-força, sendo essa unidade substituída pelo newton. Tanto o quilograma-força quando o newton são unidades derivadas do quilograma. Antes de adotar-se o IPK, o quilograma era definido como sendo a massa de um litro d'água desmineralizada a quinze graus Celsius. Abandonou-se esse método, porém, após perceber-se que a massa da mesma quantidade de água variava de acordo com a sua pureza.
