Maastricht

Maastricht is a city in the Netherlands with 121 050 inhabitants. It is one of the oldest Dutch cities and today is the capital of the Dutch province of Limburg. It runs along both banks of the Meuse river, in the south-western tip of the Netherlands, in a narrow territory, wedged between Belgium and Germany. The name of the city derives from its Latin names, Traiectum ad Mosam and Mosae Traiectum, which refers to the bridge built by the Romans during the reign of Caesar Augustus. There are several institutions that are located in the city, among them the University of Maastricht and the Bonnefanten Museum of Art. To the south of the city lies the St. Pietersberg, which houses an ancient fort and a network of caves, which maintain a constant temperature of ten degrees centigrade and serve as a place of hibernation for bats. At certain times of the year, you can visit the caves on guided tours. These caves were built by the Romans 2,000 years ago and are approximately eight kilometers long. During World War II, it housed 30,000 to 40,000 people.
