Marcassita

The marcassite is iron sulphide mineral. It is the orthorhombic polymorph of pyrite. With a hardness of 6 - 6.5 and of specific gravity 4.8 - 4.9, it crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and has metallic and opaque gloss. In general the marcassite has the yellowish-brass color, pale, sometimes quite darkened, or black that are the most used in the jewelry store. Its large-scale stoning for enclosures is concentrated in the Turnau region of Bohemia and the French Jura. A marcassita é mineral de sulfeto de ferro. É o polimorfo ortorrômbico da pirita. Com dureza 6 - 6,5 e com peso específico 4,8 - 4,9, cristaliza no sistema ortorrômbico e e possui brilho metálico e opaco. De modo geral a marcassita tem a cor amarelada-latão, pálida, por vezes bastante escurecida, ou negras que são as mais empregadas na joalheria. A sua lapidação em grande escala, para cercaduras concentra-se na região de Turnau na Boêmia e no Jura francês.
