Microfauna

Microfauna

In ecology, it is called microfauna or microbentos to the set of microscopic organisms, mostly protists, that are in several ecosystems, as the soil and the sediments marine or the lakes. It is distinguished from meiofauna or mesofauna, constituted by small animals, mainly by the size of the constituents. This term is sometimes used to refer to bacteria in an ecosystem, although it is the duty of these organisms to use the terms microbiota or microflora. The microfauna of the soil and the litter contains, in addition to protists, small animals of the Nematoda, Rotifera, insects, mites and others classes. These organisms have an important role in the biogeochemical cycles, since they feed on part of the decomposing organic matter, but also on the bacteria and fungi present, controlling their abundance. In marine sediments and lakes, the microbenthos consists mainly of protists, some of which are autotrophic, such as diatoms, but also by many heterotrophic beings, which play a role similar to that of soil microfauna.
