Noma

Noma, also known as "cancrum oris" or oral cancer, is a fulminating gangrenous inflammation of oral and facial tissues that most often affects debilitated and severely malnourished patients, particularly children. Its etiology is anaerobic oral bacteria and Borrelia vincentii. It occurs frequently in sub-Saharan Africa. Clinically it presents as a painful ulceration of the gingiva or jugal mucosa, which evolves to extensive necrosis with bone involvement. Its treatment is made with high doses of penicillin and supportive therapy. It affects especially children between 2 and 6 years of age, who are debilitated and malnourished, mainly in underdeveloped countries, such as countries of the African continent and South America. Rare cases of noma in severely immunodeficient adults, such as those with AIDS, myelopathy, or undergoing immunosuppressive therapy have also been reported.
