Placenta

The placenta is an embryonic annex existing only in the Eutheria infraclass, where the placental mammals are, through which the exchanges between the mother and her child occur. It is formed by the tissues of the ovum, embryologically derived from the chorion. Through the placenta the concept "breathes", "feeds" and excretes products of its metabolism. The placenta is also an important endocrine organ in pregnancy, involved in the production of several hormones: progesterone, chorionic gonadotrophin, placental lactogen hormone, estrogen, etc. A placenta é um anexo embrionário existente apenas na infraclasse Eutheria, onde estão os mamíferos placentários, através da qual ocorrem as trocas entre a mãe e seu filho. É formada pelos tecidos do óvulo, embriologicamente derivada do córion. Através da placenta o concepto "respira", "alimenta-se" e excreta produtos de seu metabolismo. A placenta é também órgão endócrino importante na gravidez, envolvida na produção de diversos hormônios: progesterona, gonadotrofina coriônica, hormônio lactogênio placentário, estrogênio etc.
