Pleiotropy is the name given to multiple effects of a gene. It happens when a single gene controls several characteristics of the phenotype that are often not related. A classic example of pleiotropy is phenylketonuria. The mutation in a single gene coding for the enzyme called phenylalanine hydroxylase, present in the liver and required for the metabolism of phenylalanine, causes multiple effects, such as: ▪ Mental impairment ▪ Reduction of hairiness ▪ Skin pigmentation Inverse effect, when multiple genes control the same characteristic is called polygenic heredity, gene interaction, or even quantitative inheritance. In short, pleiotropy is a pair of alleles that conditions more than one character. Another example, and simpler, is that of red and white onions: The red ones are resistant to the action of certain parasitic fungi, even if the white ones do not. It is known then that the recessive allele is responsible for the red color and at the same time by the production of a fungicidal substance. Therefore, the red onions do not suffer the action of these parasites.

Pleiotropia é o nome dado aos múltiplos efeitos de um gene. Acontece quando um único gene controla diversas características do fenótipo que muitas vezes não estão relacionadas. Um exemplo clássico de pleiotropia é a fenilcetonúria. A mutação em um único gene que codifica a enzima chamada Fenilalanina hidroxilase, presente no fígado e necessária para o metabolismo da fenilalanina, causa múltiplos efeitos, como: ▪ Incapacitação mental ▪ Redução de pilosidade ▪ Pigmentação da pele Ao efeito inverso, quando múltiplos genes controlam a mesma característica, dá-se o nome de hereditariedade poligénica, Interação gênica, ou, ainda, Herança Quantitativa. Resumindo, pleiotropia é um par de alelos que condiciona mais de um caráter. Outro exemplo, e mais simples, é o das cebolas vermelhas e brancas: As vermelhas são resistentes a ação de determinado fungo parasita, já as brancas não. Sabe-se então que o alelo recessivo é responsável pela cor vermelha e ao mesmo tempo pela produção de uma substância fungicida. Portanto, as cebolas vermelhas não sofrem a ação desses parasitas.
