Pneuma

Pneuma is an ancient Greek word meaning "breath" which, in a religious context, means "spirit" or "soul." It has several technical meanings for medical writers and philosophers of Classical Antiquity, in particular with respect to physiology, and is also used in Greek translations of the Hebrew Bible and the Greek version of the New Testament. In classical philosophy, it is distinguishable from psyche, which would originally mean "breath of life," being translated regularly as "spirit" or more often "soul."
