Purana

Purana

Purana, belonging to the class of sacred Hindu books denominated smirtis, or books to be memorized. Unlike the shrutis, or books that are to be heard from the right source, the smirtis are inferences made by the sages of innumerable ages about the original and eternal ideas, forms, and concepts mentioned in the shrutis. It is extremely difficult to date the majority of Maha-puranas, since the Puranic narratives refer to eras and cycles of creation very different from the present concepts. It is intriguing how his narratives can create insoluble paradigms in the eyes of modern science. There are numerous texts classified as puranas, and in general, the most outstanding are: ▪ Mahapuranas are eighteen main ones, as listed below. ▪ The Upapuranas, a few dozen, with incomplete text or not obeying the main structure of the great puranas. ▪ The Sthala-purans, texts that consecrate the glories and virtues of local temples, places of worship and spirituality. ▪ The Kula-puranas, or texts that tell the origin and made of dynasties, castes or social groups.
