Samarra

Samarra (Arabic: سامراء - Sāmarrā) is a city in Iraq. It is located on the eastern bank of the Tigre, in the province of Salah-ad-Din, 125km north of Baghdad. Medieval Muslim writers believed that the name "Samarra" derives from the Arabic phrase "Sarra man ra'a" (Arabic: سر من رأى), which can be translated as "a joy to all who see it." When the city declined, the name would have changed to "Sa'a man ra'a" (Arabic: ساء من رأى), "A sadness to all who see it"). Over time, the two names merged in the current form "Samarra" (in Arabic: سامراء). In 2007, UNESCO named the Archaeological City of Samarra as a World Heritage Site.
