The term taifa, in the context of Iberian history, refers to an independent Muslim principality, an emirate or small kingdom existing in the Iberian peninsula after the overthrow of the caliph Hisham III and the abolition of the Caliphate of Cordoba in 1031. The term derives from the expression Arab muluk at-ta'waif, 'the kings of the factions'.
