tempera

Quenching (painting)

Têmpera (pintura)

Tempering is a painting technique in which pigments or dyes can be mixed with a binder. This binder may be an emulsion of water and egg yolk, the whole egg, or just the egg white. Referenced in the work of Cennino Cennini, Il Libro dell'Arte, from the late 14th century, the technique of temper painting was widely used in Italian art in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, both in frescoes and in wood panels prepared with plaster or crepe . Given the limitations of technique in the gradation of color changers, it would be replaced by painters and craftsmen for oil painting. From the technological point of view, by having a very fast drying time, the gradation of tones is difficult to obtain. Hence, the technique used for this purpose is to overlap brushstrokes with dry paint, with light or dark dots or lines, and with crossed strokes. One can also work with resin varnish or with a gum on the paint, enhancing the brightness and color.
