Tuvalu is a state of Polynesia formed by a group of nine atolls, formerly called the Ellice Islands. It has maritime borders with Kiribati, to the north and northeast, with the New Zealand territory of Tokelau, to the east, Samoa to the southeast, the French territory of Wallis and Futuna to the south and Fiji, also to the south, and strategically located in southern Oceania. To the west the nearest neighbor is the Solomon Islands, but the distance between the two groups of islands is quite large. The Funafuti atoll is made up of more than 30 islands. 92% of the population is Tuvalu, 8% is made up of other Polynesian groups, especially those coming from Kiribati. The administrative division of Tuvalu is composed of nine islands. The name "Tuvalu" means "group of eight" in the Tuvaluan language, and symbolizes its eight islands that are currently inhabited.
