Verismo

Verismo

Verismo is an Italian literary chain that emerged between 1875 and 1895, based on the works of writers and poets who constituted a school based on a set of realistic principles. The founding names of the verist manifesto are Giovanni Verga and Luigi Capuana. Verismo is born under the direct influence of positivism, with absolute faith in reason and science, in the experimental method and infability of research instruments, which develops and thrives from the 1830s until the end of the 19th century. The verismo is also inspired in the literature of the naturalism, movement spread in France, in the second half of century XIX. Pietro Mascagni. The chain also manifests itself in the Italian opera, from 1890, with the Cavalleria Rusticana, of Pietro Mascagni, until the impressionism. It is marked by realism - sometimes sordid or violent - from the descriptions of everyday life, especially from the lower social classes, rejecting the historical, mythical and grand themes of Romanticism. There are those who consider that the precursory opera of verismo was Carmen, by Georges Bizet.
